I've never gotten into it, but would like to eventually. It seems to be a tier up in complexity from Brogue, and it also has quite a bit worse usability/UI.Ĭogmind I think may be another complexity level up from there. Around the same level of complexity (I think) is DCSS - I've found it somewhat playable, but can't get more than a few floors into it. (Then again, brogue is free, where GKH is a few bucks on Steam).īeyond those two I don't know much first hand - but the next step deeper towards 'less accessible/more complex' from there, I think ToME might be next - it struck me as quite accessible (graphics familiar RPG hotbar/UI/keybinds) but it's quite overwhelming with options/content/scope and classes. )įor me, Brogue comes in second after GKH, just because Brogue is a lot more unforgiving/punishing, and doesn't have graphics, so it's just that little bit more mental load when first playing. Although Splattercat is unfortunately terrible at it, which is understandable given his format. You can also find Tonehack (who is a super expert at it) and BlindIrl (who is a beginner at it) streams showcasing it on twitch, and Splattercat has covered it at least 2 times on his youtube. It's the traditional RL I've been able to play and succeed at most. It also just has loads of nice UI touches, great design, graphical and quality of life touches. The dev has said it's inspired by DCSS in many ways, so it's kind of a coffee break/lightweight DCSS if that means anything to you. Oh and awesome soundtrack (which recently got expanded in the 1.8 update). GKH has great pixel art, a cool game theme and unique light/time mechanics that help reinforce the core roguelike skill of understanding the passage of turns/actions, and beginner-friendly streamlined inventory and potion systems. *has* to be the strongest possible recommendation for the most approachable *introductory* traditional roguelike.
